Office 2007 Home and Student Edition is the current version and is readily available for about $120 at amazon.com, Costco, and many other vendors (suggested retail is $149).
If your son's education is not worth the investment to you, then OpenOffice is a free alternative that can "save as" to files that are compatible with Microsoft Office.
Personally, I would rather see my tax dollars go towards paying for prisons instead of schools... that way I'm not paying twice to first educate and then incarcerate the offspring of parents who spend their lives trying to get something for nothing by whatever means.
